Gender Links (GL) will launch its media Centres of Excellence (COE) in Tanzania on the 9th of August 2011. This ground breaking project, funded by the UK Aid’s Department for International Development (DFID), seeks to work with six media houses in Tanzania to mainstream gender in media content and practice.

Since 2007, GL has been supporting media houses in developing gender policies. So far six media houses representing 17 newsrooms have gone through a five stage gender policy development process. GL will carry this work forward and offer more sustained capacity building and support between 2011 and 2014 under the media COE project. The launch of the COEs in Tanzania will be preceded by a seminar on gender, media freedom and access to information seminar to be jointly hosted by GL and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Dar es Salaam. GL will also use this event to showcase its work with in-country partners since the signing of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. The event will be attended by numerous DFID grantees, media practitioners in Tanzania and journalism educators among others.
