The Gender Links Internship Programme

Gender Links has taught me skills that will enable me to meander through all aspects of my programme. Coming from a strong theory background in my studies I have broadened my knowledge and writing skills through writing case studies for the GMPS and opinion pieces. Not only have I learnt from the gender and media part in journalism and media studies, I have also been introduced to management aspects that come along with being in this field. This aspect has helped me to be accountable. It instills in one a sense of being orderly and organised.

À“ Tarisai Nyamweda, National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe

As the Gender and Media Diversity Centre is the knowledge centre of Gender Links, it is only natural that the GMDC would assist in passing that knowledge along to the next generation. With this ideal in mind, Gender Links actively engages with youth through our growing Internship programme. Working closely with partner institutions, the GMDC crafts the scope of this programme based on the needs of the particular university or institution of higher learning.

Quick facts:

–       Available for students enrolled in 3rd or 4th year of study.
–       Six month commitment.
–       Institution must have an MOU with Gender Links to have a placement in our Johannesburg office.
–       Institutions without MOUs can be placed in our Mauritius or Botswana office, or with our field officers.

This Internship programme is largely media-centred and is best suited for those coming from Journalism, Media Studies or Public Relations courses. However, those enrolled in Gender Studies or Sociology programmes would also be well suited for a placement at Gender Links.

We are currently seeking interns for our next cycle, January to June 2011. Kindly contact Saeanna Chingamuka at mediatraining@genderlinks.org.za if you would like to participate.
