Blessing Jona, lecturer of Journalism and Media Studies at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe, has begun an in-depth research study to assess the role of media in attitude change on gay and lesbian constructs in society. This study will analyse two popular South African soap operas, “Generations” and “Society” to track attitudes and representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex issues.
His research will also look into the issue of the emancipation of women through this medium, and in relation to coverage of lgbti constructs.
While this research is part of a PhD proposal for Jona, he will use the findings to augment his syllabus at NUST. He began this research to look at human rights issues, and how often the marriage of lgbti rights and human rights is a contested one.
