Step by Step: Our Stories is a project recently launched by World Without Mines and CMFD Productions that shares the stories of landmine survivors in Mozambique. By telling their stories through audio narratives designed for community radio and visual “digital stories,” participants are helping to raise awareness about landmines and the long-lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities. Four workshops were conducted in rural areas of Mozambique, in which participants told their stories in their own words in a participatory process that included the use of oral testimony and images. Through the storytelling process, many came to understand how important their experiences are. “I feel an added responsibility now, because my story will contribute in supporting other communities with the same struggles,” noted one participant in Chicualacuala. Each workshop also included participants from community radio, who produced feature reports. The Step by Step: Our Stories programmes are being distributed to 30 community radio stations in the country, and to organisations working on landmine issues for training and advocacy.
