Vacancy: Gender and the Media Country Facilitator Malawi

Gender Links, a Southern African NGO based in Johannesburg specialising in gender, media, women’s rights and governance, seeks the services of an experienced individual to serve as a country facilitator for its media Centres of Excellence (COE) project in Malawi. The main task of the incumbent will be to work with media houses to mainstream gender in media content and institutional practice. This project involves the development of gender policies and on the job support and training on different thematic areas in media houses.

The successful applicant, based in Malawi and working on a flexible basis, will attend periodic training sessions in Johannesburg, over the period. The deadline for submission of applications is Tuesday 7 February 2012.

Tasks will include:

  • Receive training in and serve as local facilitator for the Centres of Excellence ( COE) for gender in the media project
  • Engaging with media houses in country, and facilitating the ten-stage COE process with support from regional Gender and Media Programme Manager. See Annex A.
  • Assist media houses develop gender policies and action plans
  • Provide training to media houses on the SADC Protocol thematic areas
  • Backstopping and on-going support to media houses
  • Arrange logistics and manage budgets for media house workshops
  • Collect best practices in mainstreaming gender in media content and practice for the Gender and Media (GEM) summit and awards.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress, success, challenges in project implementation

Qualifications

  • Qualifications relevant to Media and Gender
  • At least three years experience working in this field
  • Sound knowledge of the media in Malawi
  • Excellent training, facilitation, research, management, and report writing skills and
  • IT proficiency.

The successful candidate will be required to attend a Training-of-trainers workshop in Johannesburg from 12-15 February 2012.
