Promoting gender equality across society is a core value of the Commonwealth. In 1996 member countries recommended that members should try to achieve a target of at least 30% of women in decision-making positions. The Heads of Government endorsed this in 1997.
Seven of the top ten performers in parliamentary gender equality in the Commonwealth are in Africa. The new target is to progress from 30% to 50%. Africa should meet this by 2030 and learning from each other will be a game changer.
Commonwealth Africa will meet this goal with political will and commitment
