This is a special issue of the IDS Bulletin covering action research for development and social change. Participatory research and practice for social change have been associated with development for a long time. More recently there have been innovations in practice and in this issue the contributors to the IDS Bulletin reflect on both the theory and the practice of action research for development and social change. What do our different experiences and understandings of action research have in common? What can we learn from times where they differ? By reflecting on the methods we hope to find out more about the implications and challenges of doing action research.
