The promotion of the respect for human rights is one of the essential purposes of the United Nations. The commitment to “promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion”, as stated in the Charter of the United Nations, has guided the organisation in its efforts towards setting and implementing standards in the area of international human rights.

But to uphold the rights of concerned citizens they need first to know them. Progress in the larger world must first start with human rights education in just those “small spaces, close to home.” Conveying this “common language of humanity” is the whole purpose of this manual. We need to understand and embrace the fundamental principles of human dignity and equality and accept the personal responsibilty to defend the rights of all people.
