Media control was one of apartheid’s many props and the board of the Open Society Foundation recognised the enormous potential of community radio to contribute to both freedom of expression and local development. In South Africa, as in many other parts of the world, community radio developed out of political struggle. This booklet, marking 10 years of community radio support, is a critical reflection of the foundation’s programme and looks at the positives and negatives of our engagement with the community radio sector. Intended to be used by others working in the field, it explains our processes and practices and describes some of the nuts and bolts of the funding interaction.
