This research was carried out for the Media Council of Kenya by the East Africa School of Journalism. We would like to thank the School and particularly the ten journalism students who were directly involved in data collection.

Many thanks also to the former Principal of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) Mr. Matu Nguri who pored over the raw data, analyzed it and gave it a final polish.

We would like to thank Mr. Dominic Odipo for his involvement in the intial stages of this research.

The research and this publication would not have been possible without the financial support of Ford Foundation especially Rob Burnet and Naomi Kimani. To them, we offer our heartlfelt gratitude not only for the research but also for the very useful advice and encouragement that they offered the Council.
