The policy and the process that accompanies it is part of a pilot project with Gender Links, a Southern African NGO that promotes gender equality in and through the media, the MBC, and Media Watch Organisation, with support from the Friederich Ebert Foundation. The project is in part a response to the Gender and Media Baseline Study (GMBS) that identified serious gender disparities in the media in the region, including Mauritius. The aim of the project is to follow up on the findnings of the GMBS, conducted in Mauritius by GL, Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) and MWO to ensure that these findings are translated into strategies for change at institutional level. The process has the support of the MBC Board and top management of the MBC, as stated by the Chairperson of the Board at the opening of the MBC workshop on 27 October 2003. Mauritius is one of the three pilot projects in the region initiated in 2003 that include a state-owned newspaper in Zambia and commercial radio station in South Africa. The MBC is looked to as one of several best practices to be presented at a regional Gender and Media Summit in mid 2004.
