The National Women’s Institute, INMUJERES, and UN Women jointly develop the project “Institutionalization and mainstreaming of a gender perspective in public budgets in Mexico at state and municipal levels”. The project aims to collaborate with states and municipalities to incorporate a gender perspective in the processes of planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of public programmes to achieve equality of outcomes between women and men.
Gender-responsive budgets are an indicator of government commitment to women’s rights and gender equality at the three levels of government (federal, state and municipal) and one of the most effective ways to accelerate towards more equal societies with higher levels of well-being.
The booklet “International experiences in elaborating public budgets with a gender perspective” presents some of the most important findings in the review of international experiences on gender-responsive budgeting and briefly explains the cases of Australia, South Africa, Ecuador, Italy, Morocco, Nepal and labeling of resources in the case of Mexico.
This publication is a starting point and inspiration for those interested in learning about designing public budgets with a gender perspective, making reference to other experiences in the same area. It is important to review these practices so as to learn from their successes and failures, as well as to understand the key actors involved in its definition and implementation, and the tools that have proven effective in moving towards gender equality.
