This publication examines the effect of career breaks on women’s employment. It is the report of a research project funded by the Women’s Research and Employment Initiative Program.

The project explores working histories of Australian women and how the interaction between home and working life affects their career prospects.

The data indicates that only one in five women had worked continuously and that women who had taken a break were less likely to advance in their careers.
