Media plays a major role in shaping opinions and attitudes with regard to gender, sexual and reproductive health, gender based violence and infant and maternal health and HIV and AIDS. The media not only shapes public opinion but sets an agenda for raising and discussing issues on a national level. However media practitioners and editors are often unaware of the gender dimension behind their reports and the coverage of women and girls in the media is not only under-reported but often insensitive.

This media monitoring toolkit has been developed to focus attention on aspects of gender reporting. It will facilitate the monitoring of the coverage of gender issues and draw attention to the type of coverage of gender issues and events in newspapers, television and radio. It can be used by editors, government officials, students or community leaders.

The objective is to change the type of coverage given to gender issues over time. Through regular monitoring there should be an improvement in both quantity and quality of media coverage of the role of women in society which should lead to more gender sensitive reporting.

The toolkit is divided into various sections to allow the user to use the entire kit or just sections. One section allows the analysis of the front page of a newspaper, but this can easily be extended to allow analysis of the inside pages as well. The user can also follow publications or news bulletins over a period of time and compare coverage between different media.
