Entrepreneurship is the backbone of a thriving economy. Democracy and literacy depend on the success of print media. In South Africa today, an upsurge of local entrepreneurship is resulting in the rapid growth of newspapers and magazines to serve previously disadvantaged communities in the cities, peri-urban areas and rural mass settlements. The PDU’s research shows for the first time how historical and contemporary forces are producing a new market, new readers and new publishers.
