This document outlines problems relating to the effective enforcement of child maintenance in South Africa. The maintenance system referred to is the private maintenance whereby the parents of a child are legally obliged to take care of their children by paying the maintenance grant. The child maintenance systems in Tanzania and Namibia are discussed to crosscheck whether there are similar problems in the three countries.
