Gender reporting in Southern Africa is a relatively recent phenomenon and now more journalists are writing about gender issues than ever before. Inspite of this data, more needs to be written to achieve positive coverageon gender issues in Southern Africa. The major problem is the lack of aframework policy to ensure a gender perspective is integrated in all mediapolicies, programmes and operational structures. This essential handbookis the output from a regional media workshop held in Zambia in November 1998. The guide provides information tools on gender reporting drawn fromthe experiences shared by journalists who have been covering gender in the SADC region; a summary of gender policies in the region; and a gender glossary of ‘Troublesome Terms and Alternatives’.
