“For every step forward on gender equality we have witnessed a step backwards,” noted GL CEO. This is the annual state-of- women in Southern Africa report. “In the year that saw women across the world and our region march for equality, it’s time for women to claim their space…Women must make their own decisions about their bodies, their work and their lives.”

The Barometer shows that women’s lack of voice in the region reflects in the high rates of gender violence. t also reveals that contraceptive use in the region ranges from 12% to 76%. Maternal mortality rates increased in the region mainly due to HIV.
