In Kenya women form a majority of the population (52%). It is estimated that 80% of women in Kenya live in rural areas and play a significant role in the agricultural sectors as producers and providers of food and nutritional security. It is estimated that women provide up to 80-90 % of labour in subsistence farming and 70% in cash crop production. Their contribution to the agricultural sector, recognized as the “backbone of Kenya’s economyÀ is immense yet only 5% of women own land and the majority have no control over profits from farm produce.
