The changing context and prospects for agricultural and rural development in Africa

A working paper from the joint evaluation if AfDB and IFAD policies and operations in agriculture and rural development in Africa. section 1 reviews the past failure to grow and the neglact of agriculture and the legacy left behind in terms of poverty and hunger, as well as the powerful role that agricultural growth can and has played. section two covers the international landscape that affects the prospects fopr African agriculture. Section 3 looks at the causes and consequences of increases in global food prices and section 4 looks at developments in Africa. Section 5 looks at the countries mired in low growth. Section 6 is on the pillars needed for rural and agricultural development and section 7 covers new market opportunities for African farmers.
