To illuminate clergy exploitation of women, we have brought abused women’s experiences together with the voices of experts who have been influential in understanding this problem and designing real strategies for eliminating it altogether. It is deeply ironic that while ecumenical Christianity has advocated and labored for social justice and gender equality in society and its institutions for more than sixty years, Christian churches themselves remain a deep source of and abiding locus of gender injustice. Nowhere is this more graphically and painfully exhibited than in clergy sexual abuse. This abuse happens frequently in many different church communities but is rarely dealt with adequately in any.
