This booklet, which has its genesis in two panels on African women and leadership organised by the UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa, introduces three women from East Africa, two from West Africa and one from southern Africa who have all won acclaim in their respective fields and share a commitment and passion for activism on the issue of women’s political empowerment.

These women are remarkable and ordinary at the same time. They come from modest backgrounds and strauggle like many women to balance family, career and culture. They demonstrate that all citizens stand to benefit from more equitable participation in economic and and political leadership of the African continent.
