The article provides some of the legislation impacting traditional
and new media in South Africa À“ with specific reference to the
extent to which policy engages issues of diversity and gender. It
contends that media diversity necessitates an engagement with
gender equality and equity at a policy level, both internally and at
a macro level.
It argues further that media diversity is often assessed from a
liberal pluralist vantage, and foregrounds questions to be
interrogated as South Africa navigates its second decade of
democracy and associated freedoms. The article advances
consistency between domestic and regional policy as a necessary
requirement for regional harmonisation.
