As a principle of national policy, the Malawi Republican Constitution in Section 13 and Section 4(1,2) incorporates the participation of women in all spheres of society on the basis of equality with men and the right to full and equal protection by the law. It further states that any law that discriminates against women on the basis of gender or marital status shall be invalid. However, despite these provisions, women’s representation in positions of decision-making is still inadequate. Is it not equitable and logical that women should also hold a proportional share of portfolios in public life? It is therefore necessary that media should be highly involved in educating the masses about women’s participation in public life.
