Freedom of information and women’s rights instruments

Women in Africa continue to experience various forms of discrimination despite the adoption of several regional and international instruments that protect and promote women’s rights. These include the Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the African Union (AU) protocol on women’s rights, and others. Many women are not aware of these groundbreaking legal instruments, and others which their governments have signed or ratified, which could help them claim their basic human rights.
