Gender violence on medias agenda

Gender activists have had a somewhat antagonistic
relationship with media. Accusations of unfair,
stereotypical and downright sexist representation of
women have most often been at the root of this troubled
relationship. Often media have defensively responded
by either taking the criticisms on board in the interest
of producing a more diverse and representative media
(although the cases of this are few and far between) or,
as in the case of the South African “Strip the back page
campaign1À resort to public mudslinging or simply ignoring
the criticisms.
