The Gender and Media Progress Study (2010) found that there has been a marginal improvement in the proportion of women sources in the news in the region from 17% in the 2003 Gender and Media Baseline Study (GMBS) to 19% in the 2010 Gender and Media Progress Study (GMPS).
As part of the GMPS, a qualitative analysis of these findings was made via case studies. More than 100 case studies were drafted. These case studies highlight best practices in the coverage of gender, HIV and AIDS, gender-based violence as well as areas that need to be improved on. GL also undertook in-depth case studies of several media houses as part of its follow up on the MAP policy process.
The Gender Links Case Studies are an invaluable resource to media educators and trainers. They offer specific and current examples of gender in the media in Southern Africa. These case studies are accompanied by a training guide.
The full set of case studies, ordered according to GL’s Gender and Media (GEM) classification, is found on a CD ROM which accompanies the GMPS report; they can also be accessed through the GMDC Virtual Resource Centre.
If you would like to receive this CD ROM, please contact Saeanna at mediatraining@genderlinks.org.za.
