Stereotypes of the black African male continue to perpetuate the
idea of women as victims and men as the stereotypical aggressors.
These stereotypes hinder appreciation of the need for a more
sympathetic gender lens on the prospects for shared roles and
responsibilities of men and women when it comes to such issues
as childcare. New media offers new methods of participatory
research and media creation around African fatherhood. The African
Fathers Initiative is one example of an organisation using new
media technologies to raise awareness and dialogue about the
changing roles of men in African society.
