The thesis examines South African print media portrayal of the events of 9/11 as well as the Danish cartoon controversy. It argues that the media plays an important role in providing information. Especially considering the impact and immediacy of new technologies, the media is extremely influential in constructing public opinion. Media portrayal of 9/11 are described as Islamophobic and anti-Islamic, such that the thesis argues that the media has failed to play a mediating role between Western and Muslim society.
