In 2007, Kenya passed a new Sexual Offenses Bill that imposes harsh penalties on perpetrators, and broadens the definition of sexual violence. However, according to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, every 30 seconds a Kenyan woman is raped. Kenyan women are also getting a raw deal when it comes to property and inheritance rights. Certain tribes commonly practice widow and property inheritance, and although some argue this practice provides economic stability for the widow, it deprives her of the right to decide what to do with her life and her assets. Land ownership is a major obstacle to women’s economic security. According to Human Rights Watch, women in Kenya constitute 80% of the agricultural labour force and provide 60% of farm income, yet own only 5% of the land.
