The excitement around the FIFA 2010 World Cup presents an unprecedented opportunity to transform
destructive gender norms underlying South Africa’s HIV epidemic. A Medical Research Council study
found that one in four men in South Africa admits to rape and most initiate violence as young adults
(MRC 2009). “I think it is down to ideas about masculinity based on gender hierarchy and the
sexual entitlement of men,” says Rachel Jewkes of the MRC. “It’s rooted in an African ideal of manhood.”
The MRC findings underscore the need for urgent action to challenge and change what is viewed as
“acceptable behaviour.”
