Reporting refugees: The case of World Refugee Day 2007

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR), South Africa was the main destination,
worldwide, for new asylum-seekers in 2006. It is surprising
then, that the South African media paid so little attention
to 20 June, World Refugee Day, and its associated
gender issues. On the other hand, perhaps it is not
so surprising, given the media’s tendency to either
at best ignore refugees and migrant communities, or
at worst, perpetuate negative stereotypes.
