From when the first official South African Women’s National Football team was established in 1993, Banyana have been ‘making it happen’ for women’s football in South Africa. National team players have become inspirational icons and role models for thousands of South African women and girls. This Focus draws on academic research, media reports and interviews with national team players to highlight the struggles and victories of South African women footballers over the last 40 years. Despite numerous challenges and etbacks, women football has experienced immense growth over the past 15 years. Highlighting examples of battles for power and leadership, homophobic attitudes and attempts to feminise the bodies of women footballers, this Focus illustrates the hard fought victories and disappointing losses in the history of South African women’s football.
