The beneficiaries of the child support grant are mainly young women, mostly unmarried. The aim of the study was to assess the gendered impact of the child support grant in Doornkop Soweto. The child support grant is the only regular source of income in these households. Previous research studies show that the child support grant has a greater impact amongst the chronically poor. Further analysis was conducted to determine the income distribution of households earning less than R2,500 per month. While income poverty was high across all households, female headed households were worse off than male headed ones.
