The Kathleen Letshabo Cartoon Controversy: An Online Audit

As part of its Alerts and Complaints programme designed to
mobilise popular response to advertisements and coverage
considered offensive, the Gender and Media Southern Africa
(GEMSA) Botswana Chapter and the Botswana Media Women
Association (BOMWA) responded to a cartoon that appeared in
the Mmegi Newspaper of May 28, 2007, and sent a complaint to
the Botswana Press Council (BPC). The BPC judgment ruled the
cartoon not gender insensitive. The cartoon, titled BNF Congress,
supposedly depicted the Botswana National Front aspirant for
Party Presidency, Kathleen Letshabo, at its Congress being castrated
and bleeding. Given the increasing reach of online news and
information, reactions to media content in the context of online
newspapers are critical to projecting one’s viewpoint and influencing
perception, particularly as these resources are archived online. An
audit of online materials reveals potential areas for stepping up
responses in the media.
