Critics of tabloids take the journalism profession itself to task for
what they consider the poor journalistic quality of tabloid journalism.
However, what do the readers think? In particular, why have young
people become less interested in news and less critical of the
techniques typical of tabloid style? These critics often seem to
overlook the impetus coming not from journalists but from the
audience. While critics agree that the audience has a role in
determining the direction in which journalism is going, limited
empirical work has been done on how audiences actually view
news, how they define it and what they do with it. The article
discusses the characteristics of tabloids, debates on tabloidisation
of the media and implications of their booming market in the
region. The article includes the viewpoints of two readers of
tabloids, and two people who do not read tabloids. Why do some
read, and some not read.
