Are women creating their own spaces on the Internet? If so, how? This document outlines a project that looks at how women from different cultures have reacted and are using the Internet. The project focuses on how women are shaping the Internet into something which does not automatically make them a marginalized group, although they do not seem to operate at the centre of this medium. The project aims to open up possibilities for women to engage with information technology. There is an attempt to understand information technology in terms of both its technological capacity and cultural contexts. There is also an attempt to see how the possibilities presented by the Internet can help to positively change the cultural environment in which women find themselves. The question of participatory communication processes to enhance democratic sharing of information, knowledge and skills to the advantage of both men and women is also considered.
