Makonde District is a farming district. Crops grown here include cotton, maize and tobacco. Cattle are also widely reared in the district for dairy products and beef, on a commercial basis. Mining also takes place here, the main mineral being copper. The council is a spoke council in the hub and spoke programme for gender mainstreaming, mentored by Zvimba RDC. Among some of the work that council is currently doing is conducting awareness campaigns on COVID19 in schools and also providing sanitizers and buckets for handwashing to clinics and schools. The council has constructed solar-powered boreholes as an adaptation to climate change and saving energy.
