AfWID: Women’s Voice and Power as Agents of Change

Johannesburg 24 January: Women of the South Speak Out (WOSSO) Fellows from Sub-Saharan Africa will participate in the African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) high-level Forum running under the theme, Women’s Voice and Power as Agents of Change. AfWID is an inclusive platform of dialogue that seeks to unite African women from all walks of life under one roof and deliberate on issues of continental importance. It is an annual 5-day platform with its home in South Africa.

The week-long dialogue gives voice to the perspectives and experiences of thousands of African women. It intends to create a space to launch disruptive and innovative ideas ushering in new futures for a better Africa.

The upcoming African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) conference will be held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa from 27 to 31 January 2025.

Key Events and Highlights:

  1. Capacity Strengthening
    During the weekend of the 25th of January, Fellows will have the chance to give peer-to-peer feedback on their advocacy plan implementation so far, presenting successes and challenges they have faced since starting their Fellowship in August 2024. This will be followed by a rich communications training session which will prepare the Fellows for effective communication during the AfWID Forum and for the rest of their fellowship.
  2. Beijing Panel
    On January the 28th, WOSSO Fellows Dan Entseya and Jennifer Abomnger will be on a panel discussion titled “Shaping The Future We Want: Reimagining our Future Beyond Beijing.” The panel will review progress made since the Beijing Declaration while exploring new pathways for advancing gender equality across Africa
  3. Backlash Workshop
    In a two-session workshop curated and led by the WOSSO Fellows, participants will explore creative strategies to counter backlash against women’s rights. The sessions will be run in multiple languages, which include French, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, KiSwahili and English.
  4. Inter-generational Dialogue
    The WOSSO Fellows will have the honour of having sit-down discussions with seasoned women’s rights activists, Ambassador Dr. Athaliah  Molokomme, Commissioner Thenjiwe Mtintso and renowned activist Thokozile Mpumlwane. This will be an opportunity for them to learn from the experiences world world-renowned activists and also share their experiences in the work they do.
  5. Reflections and feedback.
    The final day will feature a report-back session on the AfWID program, followed by reflections and learning groups.

Other activities planned for the Fellows while in South Africa include a visit to Mandela House and other heritage sites in Soweto, the Apartheid Museum, the British High Commission in Pretoria (where they will present their advocacy plans) and experiencing the hospitality of the GL Cottages through a drumming session at the boma.
