For immediate release,
Maseru, 19 October 2020: Gender Links Lesotho and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum will now host three mini summits under the banner #VoiceandChoice in October and November after the summit was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
The first summit will be running from 28-29 October 2020 and it will be hosted for entrepreneurs and beneficiaries of the Sunrise Campaign. A total of 26 aspiring entrepreneurs will be presenting their business at the summit. At the end of the summit these entrepreneurs will hold a mini trade fair at Maseru Mall to showcase their wares. The awards giving ceremony will include launching the Women in Local Economic Development and the Women in Local Government Network.
The second summit will take place from 3-4 November 2020 and will be hosted for the Institutional Centres of Excellence (COE). The Centres of Excellence programme anchors the gender mainstreaming programme at the local level supported by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship. The COE summit will see 50 local authorities in Lesotho showcasing their institutional best practices. It will also provide a platform for Gender Links and local authorities to monitor and evaluate progress of gender mainstreaming in service delivery at the local level and to take stock of how local authorities in Lesotho are mainstreaming gender in the midst of COVID-19.
The final summit will take place on the 10-11 November 2020 and will host the thematic areas. A total of 19 applications have been received in this category and they consist of the following thematic areas; drivers of change, media, gender based violence and economic justice. The participants are drawn from local government, civil society, media and faith based organisations from all over the country. The summit will be taking place in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and will be focusing on the importance of mainstreaming gender in different areas including Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Climate Change, Gender Based Violence and Economic Justice. In particular, it will be putting emphasise on the fact that Gender Based Violence has been on the increase during COVID-19 lock-down and that it needs to be addressed at the community level. The summit will shine a light on the importance of ensuring that youth’s concerns are integrated in the governance and development processes for the improvement of service delivery and the Young Women in Local Government Network will be launched at the event.
