IAWRT’s three part event – regional conference, gender workshop and inaugural African Film festival took place from 26 to 29 October, 2016 in Johannesburg.

The theme of this year’s conference was: The African Woman and The Media: The Prison of Portrayal. The theme was designed to tackle the ways in which women are presented in African media outlets.

Presentations covered diverse situations in countries such as India, South African and Tanzania and look at where the political will exists to foster gender equality and the mainstreaming of ‘women’s issues’. For example, South African IAWRT Chapter head and local organiser, Sara Chitambo said, “South Africa has amazing policies on paper, from our constitution to the employment equity act, but in practice, even though we lead on many fronts on these issues on the African continent, there is still a long way to go in terms of editorial representation and authority.”
