“With World Press freedom Day approaching it is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.”

Media plays a critical role in informing, educating and entertaining citizens. Community media cements local democratic participation by serving as a key platform for communities highlighting issues affecting them.

Media is often faced with the practical struggle of complying with its mandate, how it shapes the way information is disseminated and is constantly encountering challenges, i.e. skilled staff, ethical practices, freedom of expression, acts of censorship from disgruntled private parties or government representatives, advertising concerns (private and government) and funding.

Institute for the Advancement of Journalism, Freedom of Expression Institute, Media Development and Diversity Agency, South African National Editors Forum and Gender Links invite you to join us in a robust, engaging and informative discussion on the current challenges facing media and its ability to effectively and independently represent citizens.
