This report combines an analysis of documents, interviews, lecture observations and student focus groups conducted at Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) in September 2009 and the University of Malawi (UNIMA) Polytechnic Department of Journalism and Media Studies in August 2010. It forms part of the Gender In Media Education in Southern Africa (GIME): the most comprehensive study yet undertaken of the gender dimensions of journalism and media education and training in tertiary institutions in Southern Africa.

Ce rapport est le résultat d’une analyse de documents, d’interviews auprès d’enseignants(es)
et de groupes de discussion avec des étudiants(es) du Département Interdisciplinaire de Formation Professionnelle (DIFP) de l’Université d’Antananarivo.

Cette étude qui est la plus vaste étude jamais entreprise sur les dimensions du genre dans l’éducation aux médias et la formation journalistique délivrée par des institutions d’études supérieures de l’Afrique australe, a été initiée par Gender Links auprès de 25 instituts d’enseignement supérieur de 13 pays de la Communauté de Développement de l’Afrique australe (SADC) Á  travers son Gender and Media Diversity Centre (GMDC), réseau virtuel et physique
d’organisations non-gouvernementales (ONG) de développement des médias et d’instituts de formation et des universités, engagés dans la prise en compte des questions de genre dans les médias.

It forms part of the Gender in Media Education in Southern Africa (GIME): the most comprehensive study yet undertaken of the gender dimensions of journalism and media education and training in tertiary institutions in Southern Africa.

Following the Audit of Gender in Media Education in Southern Africa, the GMDC has developed an online Community of Practice for media and journalism educators. The CoP will focus on four broad areas, curriculum development, course content.

First information from the GIME research will be collected, such as best practices and lessons learned. This will then be shared with the CoP and discussed. A summary of the discussion will be uploaded onto a Wiki, where it can be edited and commented on by the CoP. This dialogue will have a parallel Community of Students dialogue on Facebook.
