Johannesburg, 19 April: Over 300 delegates from around the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will converge in Johannesburg this weekend for the largest ever gathering of activists, government and media to make a concerted push for gender equality.

With the slogan “2015, yes we must!” the SADC Gender Protocol@Work regional summit follows twelve national summits (see statistics at Annex A) that involved 1484 participants, 69% women and 31% men. Some 183 winners and 30 direct entries (213 in total) will now compete at regional level. 81 of the participants are travelling outside their country, and 29 getting passports for the first time.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will officially open the summit, that runs from 22-24 April. Mauritian Minister of Local Government Herve Aimee will deliver a keynote address. In November 2012 Mauritius made history when it increased the representation of women in local government form 6% to 30% in one election following the adoption of a quota. The regional summit ends with awards and a gala dinner on 24 April addressed by the South African Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, and former Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka.

The summit consists of plenary sessions each morning (see programme at www.genderlinks.org.za/page/gender-summit) followed by parallel presentations in the theme categories (constitutional, legal and governance; health, HIV and AIDS; education and economic justice; GBV and climate change) and media categories (TV, print and radio). Institutional entries include the Centres of Excellence for Gender in Local Government and the Media that GL works with. Key civil society speakers at the plenary include Gotlhaloganyamang Phaladi, (voice of the youth, Botswana) Emma Kapandula (survivor of gender violence Zambia), and Felleng Makeka, Chair, Lesotho Business Women’s Association.

The Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance that campained for the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development (see www.sadcgenderprotocol.org) convened the national summits in patrnership with Gender Links, which coordinates the Alliance. The SADC Gender Protocol comprises 28 targets to be achieved by 2015, also the deadline for the Millennium Development goal. Globally, a debate has already started on the post 2015 agenda. The Alliance is insisting that Southern African governments must make a concerted effort to meet the agreed targets for gender parity in all areas – political, social, economic – by 2015. During the national summits (see https://www.genderlinks.org.za/page/gender-summit) representatives from civil society, the media and local government presented 742 good practices on the SADC Gender Protocol@ work in various theme categories, media, institutional and leadership categories, under the slogan “yes we can” and “yes we must!”
