Johannesburg 10 April: The Gender Links Board is pleased to announce that one of its long serving board members, Dr Muna Ndulo, has taken over as chair of the Board. The Board has also announced two additional board members, Dr Pinkie Mekgwe of Botswana and Charles Chisala of Zambia.

Dr Ndulo takes over from Thenjiwe Mtintso, South Africa’s ambassador to Cuba who has chaired the organisation since its inception in March 2001. Ambassador Mtintso remains a board member.  Dr Athalia Molokomme, attorney general of Botswana, remains the Deputy Chair of GL, a Southern Africa NGO specialising in gender, media and governance.

In a statement, Ambassador Mtintso said that “it has been a great source of satisfaction to watch GL grow from strength to strength in such a short space of time. We have been described as a small organization with large footprints. Each step we have taken has affirmed our vision of a region in which women and men are free to achieve their potential in both their private and public lives.”

The change in leadership, she noted, “is being made to strengthen oversight of GL work as well as promote diversity within our own practices. Having a man at the helm of GL will send out a powerful message about our basic belief in partnerships between women and men for achieving gender equality.”

A former dean of the faculty of law at the University of Zambia and legal advisor to the UN Observer Mission to South Africa (UNOMSA), Dr Ndulo is currently a professor in international law at Cornell University and head of the Institute for African Affairs.

“I am hounoured by the trust placed in me by fellow Board members in electing me to take over as chair of GL,” Dr Nudlo said. “I take over an organization that has had a marked impact in the region, particularly in the gender and media field. The challenges are still numerous. I look forward to strengthening our efforts in the months ahead.”

Dr Pinkie Mekgwe, who works for the Research Department of the Council for the Development of Research in the Social Sciences in Africa (CODESRIA), based in Dakar, Senegal is an internationally recognised scholar in English and African literature, gender politics and education. Charles Chisala is the HIV and AIDS Coordinator for Times Printpak Zambia Limited.

Other GL Board members are Pat Made (independent consultant and former director general of IPS); Ferial Haffajee (editor of the Mail and Guardian newspaper); Ruth Ayisi (an independent consultant based in Mozambique) and Loga Virahsawmy (President of Mauritian Media Watch).  Colleen Lowe Morna, former CEO of the South African Commission on Gender Equality, as well as a journalist and editor of several years experience, is executive director of the organisation.
