Africa: Child marriage – Africa’s “scandal”
On 16 June, we celebrated Day of the African Child and on the eve of this day, African Heads of State adopted a continent wide plan for ending child marriages at the African Union summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Speaking to the Thomas Reuters Foundation, Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda, AU Goodwill Ambassador, said it is scandalous for a continent as rich as Africa to be selling off and selling short its daughters. This situation only buries young girls deeper into the trenches of poverty, inequality and abuse.
