How discrimination and stigmatization traumatizes PLWA psychologically and economically
How discrimination and stigmatization traumatizes PLWA psychologically and economically

This article may be used in training:
  • Carry out campaigns on how different sectors play a key role in caring for PLWA.
  • Advocate for legal instruments (policies etc) for dealing with HIV/AIDS at workplaces.
  • To create awareness at family levels and communities on issues of stigma and discrimination.
  • Empowerment of vulnerable groups and their rights
  • To demonstrate the value of multi sourcing; proper use of language; and writing stories with human face.

Trainers notes:
The article is progressive, because it has human face and gender dimension, but has some shortcoming in terms of language. However, it has some shortcomings with regard to use of language (eg sufferer).

Training exercise:
  • Re-write the story to improve language, with special attention to phrases such as: Aids sufferer….; “Visibly distressed…”; “…..absconded from work after her disappearance…”
  • Get more voices by interviewing other vulnerable people; women and men.
  • Use the case study to prompt a debate on disclosure: whether there are more advantages or disadvantages, given the situation and understanding in the local context.
