This article may be used in training to:
Demonstrate the barriers to women entrepreneurs, as well as policy measures that can be taken to ensure women’s more meaningful participation in business.

Trainer’s notes
Use this article to draw out constraints as well as possibilities for women entrepreneurs. For example, Mmema dropped out of school as a result of pregnancy; she lost her job; when she tried to get a loan she was advised that she needed the consent of her husband. However, she got help from SEDCO which provided seed money, premises and recommended her for a bigger loan. She and her family have undergone management training. She is able to compete on price, quality and innovation (eg the Swazi plait skirt). Though a simple story, this raises many key issues for discussion with regard to barriers to women in the market place; the policy environment and the difference that this can make, as well as the sheer perseverance of the individual.

Some training exercises
Arrange a panel of women entrepreneurs and ask them to speak about their experiences; the barriers they face and how they are able to overcome these; as well as policy recommendations they may have. If possible include policy makers in the panel to respond and give information on measures they are taking to support women in business.
