The payment of a bride price (lobola) is still a common feature of many marriages across Southern Africa. Recent research conducted by the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA) found the tradition to be a major cause of gender violence including battering, marital rape, forced labour, tough jobs, and harassment – some of which leads to death.

I concur with this discussion concerning the gender issues in bride price/dowry payment. In essence it has been used by the patriarchal society to reinforce and maintain gender inequities between men and women through cultivating a gender identity on women as weak, subordinate, valueless and by further commoditizing them.
