Gender based violence is a persistent and complex problem in Southern African that has implications on social and economic equality, physical and mental health, well being and economic security. Because this violence takes so many forms and the fact that many cases are never reported or end up withdrawn, measuring gender based violence has proven difficult not only for the region but globally. Hence there is a growing need for a standardised tool that can be applied across communities and across countries capable of measuring gender based violence in order to both provide baseline data and to monitor trends.
